THE CHALLENGE

The client’s marketing department very often plans seasonal promotional actions. Most often, the steps are taken quickly, at the last minute. For example, a given pizza ingredient is at a reasonable price. Purchase managers can purchase it in larger quantities, or the marketing calendar requires the use of special periods or holidays for company activities. Logistics specialists on the customer side must organize it smoothly in such a situation. The higher volume of deliveries affects the need for many rolling cages working in warehouses during this intensive period.

SOLUTION

Seasonal activities require efficient operations. Due to the high urgency of operations, rental rather than the purchase of rolling cages is most advantageous. In this case, the customer requires an average of 500 additional roll containers for 2-3 weeks to cope with the higher volume of deliveries. The customer usually collects the carriers themselves from Rotom’s warehouses in the Netherlands, which are advantageously located near the customer’s operations.

What kind of roll containers for rent works well in the food industry?

For the customer as a pizza producer, double-sided roll containers with dimensions of 800 x 615 x 1485 mm and a plastic base work well in warehouse logistics. This type of roll container is thermally galvanized and thus resistant to scratches and rust. Additionally, the roll container is equipped with four rubber wheels, which are quiet and adapted to the surface on which the cart with the load is transported. Placing goods on the roll container, whose load capacity is up to 500 kg, is a practical and efficient way of loading, unloading, and safely transporting products.

The Client is a fast-growing international chain of industrial goods stores. It is currently (2022) the fastest growing non-food discounter in Europe, offering a diverse range of products in more than 2000 stores for more than 12 million customers. In 2021 alone, the client opened more than 260 new stores in Europe. In addition to the Netherlands, the Client has stores in Poland, Belgium, France, Germany, Luxembourg, and Austria. It is a large-scale company currently employing more than 65,000 people in 10 countries from over 124 different nationalities. Due to this extreme growth, the demand for the required roll containers, which function as indispensable logistics carriers in the Customer’s stores and warehouses, is constantly increasing.

THE CHALLENGE

The unforeseen situation in 2020 related to the Covid-19 pandemic proved to be a test for many industries, including the Client’s business. The temporary lockdown caused disruptions related to the production and delivery of new, essential roll-off containers. However, this did not affect the decline in incoming orders and the scheduled openings of new stores that needed to be stocked.

It turned out that stay-at-home customers were very eager to order non-food products as furnishings for their homes. It led to further growth and the need to open more outlets. For the expansion of the logistics to take place efficiently, the logistics managers needed to quickly deliver a massive number of rolling cages to the warehouses, where all shipments were almost halted.

THE SOLUTION

In this case, time was the essence and the fastest possible supply of the warehouses with the necessary media, so purchasing roll containers was not an option. The ideal solution turned out to be rental. Why? Thanks to the fact that Rotom has a large pool of high-quality roll containers at its disposal on request, the Customer could maintain the fluidity of operations and receive them as soon as possible. Within a few days, we provided the Customer with 12 000 roll containers in 40 trucks (300 units in each trailer). The Customer picked up the collection of the carriers from Rotom’s warehouses.

In 2020 Client cooperated with over 1,000 Polish suppliers, from which 92% of the products in the chain’s offer came. The value of the Customer’s investments in Poland for over 26 years amounts to over PLN 14 billion. It is dynamically developing today; it already has over 17 distribution centers, and more than 4 million customers visit its stores.

THE CHALLENGE

Peak sales times – concern for preserving product freshness

In the period of sales peaks, e.g., before holidays, the Client reorganizes logistics in distribution centers to cope more efficiently with the increase in orders. There is not enough space in the warehouse in the period of increased activity. It will not be possible to process all orders in time due to the limited capacity of logistic facilities. Moreover, concern for the high quality of the shipped food is critical. The shipment of food products must be made at strictly controlled low temperatures to ensure consistently high quality. It is essential because a lack of temperature control during shipping can disqualify goods and affect customer dissatisfaction.

Why did the leading retailer in Poland choose isothermal roll containers?

Isothermal containers are commonly used for food transportation in the so-called “cold chain”. You can compare them to a thermos flask – they ensure the required temperature over a longer transport time without additional cooling equipment, which makes them ideal for short and medium distances. They are a good choice for transporting fresh food.

The Customer had a high demand for refrigerated roll containers, but they decided that the second option was much more beneficial when comparing the purchase and rental costs.

What does the financing model look like while packaging rental?

Containers used for food protection were mainly used during sales peaks, implying that the packaging would be unused for half a year. Logistics specialists organize the implementation of the budget for the entire year – a specific amount that must be prudently disposed of. They realize that they would use up the annual budget by choosing to purchase refrigerated containers. Therefore, they asked for a rental offer for a period of min. 3 years because the longer the rental period, the lower the monthly rate.
